World on alert to contain Mexico Flu spread

Governments around the world have been hurrying to contain the spread of a new swine flu virus after outbreaks were reported in Mexico, the US and Canada.

At least 100 people are now suspected to have died of the disease in Mexico.

The UN has warned the virus has the potential to become a pandemic, but said the world was better prepared than ever to deal with the threat.

Stocks of anti-viral medicines are being readied and travellers are being screened at some airports for symptoms.

LONDON (Reuters) - Pupils and staff at a school in Wales are being offered anti-flu drugs after being in contact with a child suspected of contracting bird flu in an outbreak of a mild strain of the virus, health authorities said on Monday.

Teachers and children at the school, which is close to a farm in Corwen, North Wales, where the H7N2 strain of bird flu was discovered last week, were being treated with antiviral medication as a precaution, the National Public Health Service (NPHS) said in a statement.

The best defence against wrinkles

For our skin his advice is simple: instead of taking cocktails of supplements, just stay away from sugary, refined carbohydrates such as muffins and biscuits, cakes, puddings, sweets and sugar-rich drinks. In other words: the GI diet is both good for your weight and vital for your skin.

According to Dr Perricone, controlling blood sugar is the single most important antiageing step we can take to help to age beautifully, prevent wrinkling and preserve lean muscle mass.

New bird flu outbreak in Vietnam

Vietnam has confirmed a lethal H5N1 bird flu outbreak among its domestic poultry in the south of the country.
Some 5,500 ducks and 500 chickens have died in the last two weeks in two provinces on the Mekong Delta, health ministry officials said.

The government said there was "an extremely high risk" of it spreading widely in the delta region.

Vietnam has been free of human cases of bird flu for a year, following a large culling and vaccination drive.

The last known major outbreak among birds was in December 2005.

Many would 'want to live to 100'

What society needs is a little help in becoming healthier by cutting back on unhealthy food and drink.
Many Britons would give up favourite things, including sex, to reach 100 years of age, a poll suggests.
Some 40% said they would give up sex - half of women and a third of men - 39% food and drinks and 42% travel.

But the Bupa survey of 1,003 people found 94% would not give up the company of family and friends and three quarters would not sacrifice money.
